Buck - Julian Hinds 230kV, CA

Wilson was awarded the Buck – Julian Hinds 230kV project for NextEra in 2009. The yearlong project included the installation of just over 67 miles of new 230kV transmission line from the Blythe Energy Plant to the Julian Hinds Pumping Station. The conductor consisted of triple-bundled 1033.5 “Curlew” ACSR and an OPGW installation. The transmission line was comprised of 286 concrete structures and 143 tubular steel structures. Some of the concrete structures weighed over 80,000 pounds. The design was primarily single pole with davit arms, but there were some H-Frames, and 3-Pole structures.

The project helped transport power from the Blythe Energy Plant to the Southern California Edison energy grid. The particular project was extremely unique because it was a non-utility regulated project. This meant it fell under different, stricter guidelines and inspection procedures. Crews stayed ahead of schedule and finished without incident.
